Aung Y Oo is Clinical Lead in aortovascular surgery and the Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Bart Heart Centre, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and William Harvey Research Institute of Queen Mary University, London. Aung also works in the Cleveland Clinic Clinic London as a consultant cardiac surgeon. He is a co-Lead for the pan-London complex aortovascular network of the NHS London cardiovascular network. He completed medical training at Institute of Medicine 1, Yangon, Myanmar. Following his move to the UK, he completed training in general basic surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, London Chest Hospital, and Wythenshawe Hospital. He previously held clinical, educational, and managerial leadership positions in Liverpool Heart Hospital and developed an aortic surgery programme. He is also affiliated with the University of Liverpool and the University of Sydney and medical universities in Myanmar as an honorary and visiting Professor in cardiac surgery. He is a highly sought-after trainer in complex aortic surgery by many trainees and junior surgeons from various parts of the world. He is also very active in research and has authored over 200 papers in the field of cardiac surgery and aortic surgery. He is a very busy international faculty, regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences. His research includes biomarkers in spinal cord protection in thoracoabdominal aortic surgery, organ protection strategies in complex aortic surgery, minimal access cardiac and aortic surgery, and also in aortic dissection.
